UK Power Networks Services to help deliver Greater Manchester’s greener future

UK Power Networks Services has been accepted onto a framework that will deliver projects to renew and upgrade Manchester Metrolink’s electrical infrastructure to help support Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM’s) green transport strategy.
The investment and upgrade works aim to meet Greater Manchester’s sustainability ambitions for a cleaner, greener and more prosperous city region, by supporting a fully integrated, high-capacity tram system across Greater Manchester that’s also environmentally sustainable.
Manchester Metrolink is already one of the most sustainable modes of transport in Greater Manchester – the trams are powered by renewable and green energy sources with no harmful emissions, and each can carry more than 200 passengers.
Greater Manchester’s population has risen to 2.8 million people. The electrical upgrade will ensure that the tram system continues meet the city’s economic growth ambitions.

It demonstrates our commitment to the region in addition to our industry-leading work at Manchester Airport.”
The first project that UK Power Networks Services will work on under the framework is a seven-month programme currently under way, which will include inspecting and replacing electrical equipment, the design of digital signals, and assessment of the current fibre optic communications at electricity substations. The company will leverage its vast experience of running London Underground and Network Rail infrastructure to deliver the project with the minimum of disruption to tram services and the community.
