UK Power Networks Services wins top innovation accolade for world-first technology
14 September 2018: We won Innovation of the Year at the National Rail Awards last night in London for our work on the Great Western Electrification Programme.
The project implemented the Rationalised Autotransformer System, a state of the art advanced protection system which reduces the need for circuit breakers and other equipment whilst maintaining safe operation of the line.
A collaboration between UK Power Networks Services, ABB, Siemens and Network Rail Infrastructure Projects, will deliver a cost saving in the procurement, installation, and maintenance of an autotransformer electrification system.
The innovation was developed and implemented for the first time as part of the Great Western electrification and is a world first on this scale in a railway environment.
Ian Smyth, Director of UK Power Networks Services, said: "UK Power Networks Services won Innovation of the Year at the National Rail Awards last night in London for their work on the Great Western Electrification Programme.
“This innovation is a world first and will deliver cost savings, increased electrical safety and better reliability compared to other systems installed in the UK.”
